The European Society of Cardiology has published guidance on the diagnosis and management of cardiovascular diseases during the COVID-19 epidemic.
The SARS-CoV-2 virus not only causes viral pneumonia but also has major implications for the cardiovascular system. Heart and stroke patients are more likely to have severe cases of COVID-19, as are people with other risk factors, including advanced age, diabetes, hypertension and obesity. In addition, COVID-19 therapies themselves may lead to heart damage.
Issues addressed in the guidance include the following:
- Cardiovascular manifestations on COVID-19
- Impact of cardiovascular comorbidities on COVID-19 infection outcomes
- Diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular conditions in COVID-19 patients
- Acute cardiac injury and myocarditis in patients with COVID-19
- The relationship between hypertension, ACE-2, and COVID-19
- Strategies for diagnosing COVID-19
- The use of anticoagulants in patients with COVID-19
- Categorisation of urgency for invasive procedures
